WHEN YOUR HEATER ISN’T WORKING

A Few Quick Things You Can Check

Some heating problems have a simple cause. Before scheduling service, these basic checks may help you identify something that can be corrected safely.

1. Check the Thermostat

Make sure the thermostat is set to HEAT and the temperature setting is above the current indoor temperature.

2. Check the Air Filter

A heavily clogged filter can restrict airflow and affect heating performance. Replace it if it is visibly dirty.

3. Check the Breaker

Check whether the breaker serving the heating equipment has tripped. If it trips again after being reset, leave it off and call for service.

4. Make Sure the Vents Are Open

Make sure supply registers and return-air openings haven’t been closed or blocked by furniture, rugs, or other objects.

SIGNS YOUR HEATING SYSTEM NEEDS SERVICE

When It’s Time to Call a Technician

If the basic checks don’t solve the problem, the system may need professional diagnosis. Some heating symptoms are also important from a safety standpoint.

The system is running but the home stays cold
— Weak heat, long run times, or rooms that never get comfortable can indicate an equipment or airflow problem.
Frequent cycling
— Heating that repeatedly starts and stops may point to a thermostat, airflow, electrical, or equipment issue.
Unusual noises
— Banging, grinding, rattling, or other new sounds should be checked before they develop into a larger problem.
Repeated breaker trips or system shutdowns
— Repeated electrical trips or safety shutdowns are not something to keep resetting and ignoring.
Gas odor or a carbon monoxide alarm
— Leave the home and contact the appropriate emergency or gas utility service. Do not continue operating the heating system until it has been checked.
REPAIR OR REPLACE?

When Does Heating Replacement Make Sense?

A heating system does not need to be replaced just because it is older. The right decision depends on repair cost, reliability, comfort, equipment condition, and whether the system is still worth investing in.

Repair May Make Sense When

✓ The system has otherwise been dependable.
✓ The repair cost is reasonable.
✓ Major components are still in good condition.
✓ The home heats comfortably when the system is operating properly.
✓ Breakdowns have not become a recurring problem.

Replacement May Be Worth Considering When

✓ Repairs are becoming frequent or expensive.
✓ A major component has failed.
✓ The system struggles to heat the home evenly.
✓ Reliability has become a concern each winter.
✓ Repair costs are becoming significant compared with replacement.

Age is only one part of the decision. We recommend diagnosing the system first and then comparing the repair with the condition and expected reliability of the equipment.

HEATING MAINTENANCE & SAFETY

Keep Your Heating System Ready for Cold Weather

Routine maintenance can help identify developing problems before winter and is especially important for systems that use gas or other combustion-based heating.

Replace Dirty Filters

Check the air filter regularly and replace it when dirty so the system can maintain proper airflow.

Test Your CO Alarms

Homes with fuel-burning appliances should have working carbon monoxide alarms and batteries replaced as recommended by the manufacturer.

Schedule Seasonal Service

A professional heating inspection can help identify airflow, electrical, ignition, venting, and other equipment concerns before temperatures drop.
